Just like you, your skin needs to be taken care of. And, just like you, your skin has its own personality. There is no one-size-fits-all routine. On the contrary, your choice of products is essential in maintaining healthy-looking skin. Here’s what you need to know to find your way around.
The basics of a good beauty routine
Regardless of your skin’s specific needs, any good beauty routine has these four steps: cleanse, exfoliate, treat, moisturize. Daily cleansing of your skin helps remove surface impurities and reduce excess sebum. In the evening, it will remove makeup and sun protection residues from the day. In the morning, it will remove dead skin and other impurities accumulated during the night. Needless to say, it also preps your skin to help it make the most of your daily care products.
About three to four times a week, after cleansing your skin, exfoliate it. There are two types of exfoliants: physical exfoliants whose micro-beads mechanically exfoliate the surface layer of the skin to remove dead cells that lodge there, and chemical exfoliants, also known as “peelings”. The latter work deeper with more efficiency, dislodging all impurities. Worried about your sensitive skin? Our Glyco Pad Restructiv will suit all skin types, even the most sensitive. Freed from dead skin cells that dull its appearance, your skin will be left with a brighter complexion and a more even texture. Additionally, the active ingredients contained in your serums and creams will be better absorbed by your freshly exfoliated skin.
Start with your eye contour treatments, followed by your selected serum. Or serums, if you are a fan of layering. Serums are powerful active ingredient concentrates that target various needs your skin made have. It is possible to apply several different ones, in layers, to maximize the benefits. Your moisturizer should be applied last.
Identify your skin type
Not all skin types have the same preoccupations and needs. You have surely seen label indicating products to be for “oily skin”, “dry skin” or “normal skin”. What do we mean by them?
To identify your skin type, pay attention to its appearance and texture. Oily skin will tend to look shiny, especially the nose and forehead area. That is caused by excess oils on its surface. The pores, often clogged with sebum or impurities, will be more dilated and therefore visible.
At the other end of the spectrum, dry skin can be recognized by the absence of shine. It is more likely to be irritated and red. It may also have areas of desquamation, i.e., areas where skin cells detach, similar to the peeling skin effect that occurs after a sunburn. If you frequently feel tightness (as if your skin could stretch more and was going to rip), there is no doubt that you have dry skin.
A so-called “normal“ skin does not have any noticeable dry patches or oily areas and its texture would be uniform across the entire face. If you are unsure about your skin type or would like more details on each one, check out our guide for even more information and personalized advice.
Tailor your routine to your skin type
Now that you’ve identified your skin type, let’s tailored your basic routine (cleansing, exfoliating, serum, and moisturizing) to your specific needs.
Oily skin
When it comes to oily skin, choose non-comedogenic products. It means their ingredients or formulations have less risk of clogging your pores, which in turns lead to blackheads and whiteheads.
Don’t be fooled by its oiliness, your skin still requires hydration. Drying products would quickly result in an oilier skin. Seeking to protect itself from aggression, your skin would only increase its sebum production. Instead, start your routine with our Hydractiv 4-in-1 cleansing gel. It will gently cleanse your skin, while moisturizing it. Its biolipid-rich oils will help preserve your skin’s natural barrier, protecting it from daily attacks. Bonus: it will remove any makeup you might have on, even waterproof products.
When it comes to active ingredients, look for blemish-fighting actives like zinc, BHAs, or niacinamide. The latter has a smoothing property that can be interesting for skins with uneven textures. It can help even out irregularities, in addition to reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, by stimulating collagen production.
After applying a moisturizing gel with a non-greasy texture, go in with our Lift Eye Anti-Aging Serum. Its rich formula will firm up your skin, restoring the plumpness of the delicate skin around your eyes.
Normal skin
Encore Once again, our Hydractiv 4-in-1 cleansing gel is your ally. Following your cleansing and exfoliation, apply our Lift Eyes anti-aging serum. Its peptide-rich formulation will reduce the appearance of wrinkles and firm up the eye contour. For a younger-looking, plump skin allover, turn to our HA 1.5% Plumping Anti-Aging Serum. It will provide deep hydration with a concentration of hyaluronic acid that retains up to 1000x its weight in water. It also contains peptides that will stimulate your skin’s natural collagen production. When it comes to your moisturizer, choose a light cream that will be quickly absorbed by your skin. Finish off your routine our smooth, rich 3-IN-1 anti-aging cream for All skin types.
Dry skin
Les Dry skins will fall for our Hydractiv Cleansing Milk which cleanses, moisturizes, softens and soothes the irritation and tightness common to dry skin. Once the skin is clean, apply a moisturizing serum to counter dryness. Hyaluronic acid, ceramides and peptides will be your best allies.
Hydration should be your main focus. Our 3-IN-1 cream for normal to dry skin and its rich texture will be sure to make your skin happy. Rebalancing your skin barrier, this anti-aging treatment will reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by stimulating the production of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid.
Avoiding these common mistakes
Your skin needs time to adapt. Changing products too frequently could upset its balance and lead to more impurities. Your routine can be adapted according to seasons and evolving needs, but remember to introduce new products gradually rather than all at once. This is also true for adding new powerful active ingredients such as retinol to your routine. It is better to incorporate the new active ingredients one by one to avoid shocking your skin and causing irritation. To truly get the full effect of your routine, stick to it consistently!
